Since arriving at Slava Raškaj for my volunteering project, I’ve been discovering an environment that is rich, human, and inspiring. This is my first volunteering experience and my first time abroad, yet already one of the most meaningful ones in my life. Although it’s not the first time I’ve worked with children with disabilities, the real challenge here is the language barrier. Still, I quickly realized that communication goes far beyond words : a look, a smile, a gesture, or the music are often enough to build a genuine connection. ✨

I have the opportunity to join the physiotherapy sessions in primary school, where I observe and support the specialized work done to help the children’s motor development.

I spend a lot of time with a social worker, and together we meet the children regularly to talk, create, and take part in different activities adapted to their needs. We recently made Christmas cards, a warm and creative moment. We are also preparing a workshop on Internet safety, an important topic that we will soon deliver together.

I also spend time with the french teacher in high school and help her to prepare activities for the high school students. We even organized a french dinner at the apartment, together with the pastry teacher, the french teacher, and several students. It was a very warm, delicious, and intercultural moment.

This volunteering experience teaches me as much about others as it does about myself. I’m learning new ways to communicate, to support, to create, and to understand, even without speaking the same language. This human richness is what makes my time at Slava Raškaj so special ! ♡
